Happy Mother's Day!

My mother’s day began with a 5 a.m. wake-up call from the hospital to notify me of a patient in labor at 5 cm. Perfect, I thought, she should deliver right before church, babies aren’t usually so convenient! I was in the shower at 6:30 when my pager went off. She’s complete my secretary/husband informed me. Crap. Despite years of doing this, I don’t think I’ve ever had to leave in the middle of a shower. I skipped the conditioner, threw on some clothes and tucked my blow dryer in my giant purse. I get to the hospital a few minutes later. After a little while of pushing, I deliver an absolutely beautiful baby. What an amazing first mother’s day for this woman as she holds her child in her arms.

Next, I try to make some sense of my hair. I did the best I could, but will have to dig out the flat iron when I get home later. I finish my paperwork and check on the other patients in the hospital.

I arrive home just as the boys are finishing up their breakfast. Hugs and mother’s day wishes all around. Ryan gives me a homemade card that is so sweet it brings me to tears. I feel overwhelmed at how blessed I am. Thankful beyond words.

“Are you ready to go?” My husband asks, startling me out of my mommy –teary- daze.

Darn. I need to finish getting ready. No time for a flat iron, just some quick powder and mascara. Now what to wear? No skirts or anything sleeveless-because I seriously didn’t have time to shave this morning. I put on some Capri pants but as I’m about to walk out door I notice they make my butt look really weird. Nice. So I change again , while husband and boys wait somewhat patiently in car.

We had a wonderful mother’s day church service. I made it all the way through with no pages. Later I realize, with a smile, that the baby that was dedicated during service is one I delivered.

Only one major meltdown at lunch from our picky 6 year old, which is a Mother’s Day miracle itself. I feel sorry for the waiters at fancy restaurant who obviously aren’t used to so many kids running around. The food was yummy.

I had a nice rest of the day. Playing with my boys, talking to my mom and enjoying a nice walk in the sunshine.

So Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s and Mom’s-to-be out there! I’m thinking we should extend it and make it mother’s week!
